Character Info: Classmates

Yutaka's thoughts on/interactions with his classmates.

Wherever canon leaves gaps, I will supply headcanon.

Present tense means that as of Yutaka's canon point (just after Mim kills Keita), the character is still alive, or believed by Yutaka to be alive. Past tense means that Yutaka knows the character is dead. Additionally, any information Yutaka does not know about a character will be omitted.

Yoshio Akamatsu, Boy #1 - Weapon: Crossbow - A shy, overweight boy who was frequently bullied in class. Yutaka sometimes teased him, but never maliciously. He was fond of Akamatsu's video gaming skills. Yutaka witnessed Akamatsu's death at Kazushi Niida's hands.

Keita Iijima, Boy #2 - Weapon: Kitchen Knife - An ineffectual sort of boy. He was known for his weak stomach, vomiting at the first sight of blood, and his nervous laughter at inappropriate moments. Yutaka had known him for quite a while and considered him a friend. Yutaka noted that Keita was useless, scared easily, and primarily looked out for himself, but Yutaka thought his attitude was justified. Keita tried to harbor resentment between Yutaka and Mim, but Yutaka didn't fall for it and even forgave Keita shortly before Mim killed him. Yutaka was very upset over Keita's death, upset enough to question Mim's allegiance.

Tatsumichi Oki, Boy #3 - Weapon: Hatchet - A cheerful and burly boy who only recently moved to Shiroiwa. For that alone, Yutaka feels it's unfair that he's been culled into the Program. He's good at playing handball. The Battle Royale seems to affect Oki worse than anyone: He is so determined to survive, so aggressive in that determination, that he no longer resembles his previous open and honest self.

Toshinori Oda, Boy #4 - Weapon: Bulletproof Vest - Rich bastard, BURN IN HELL

Shogo Kawada, Boy #5 - Weapon: Shotgun - A transfer student who looks closer to eighteen than fourteen. Yutaka thinks he's cool--in a distant sort of way. He is also terrified of him. I mean, come on, the boy's sporting some serious scar tissue...

Kazuo Kiriyama, Boy #6 - Weapon: Machine Gun - Yutaka doesn't pay Kiriyama much mind; he knows Kiriyama belongs to a street gang and wears his hair hoodlum style, but...Kiriyama's so quiet, he's practically not there. Until he shoots Yutaka to death, anyway. Oops.

Yoshitoki Kuninobu, Boy #7 - Weapon: N/A - A very laid back and easygoing boy who was always with Shuya Nanahara. Yutaka admired him a lot for taking everything in stride. Yutaka was horrified when Yonemi Kamon, the "Program Instructor," killed him before the Battle Royale even began.

Yoji Kuramoto, Boy #8 - Weapon: Dagger - A boy of mixed race (Latino and Japanese). He was something of a goofball, often crying at chick flicks; he was friendly and madly in love with Yoshimi. Yutaka liked him well enough. Then he found him dead in the woods.

Hiroshi Kuronaga, Boy #9 - Weapon: Unknown - Hypocrite. Why is he allowed to bully Akamatsu for being fat when he's even fatter?

Ryuhei Sasagawa, Boy #10 - Weapon: Machine Pistol - Common thug. Blech. Get a haircut, creep.

Hiroki Sugimura, Boy #11 - Weapon: Tracking Device - Yutaka admires the strong and silent boy for his inner strength. Yutaka secretly thinks if anyone has a real shot of winning the program, it's Sugi.

Yutaka Seto, Boy #12 - Weapon: Fork - ...This would be Yutaka. According to source material, he doesn't have a very high opinion of himself, but this is not apparent when he spends most of his time wisecracking.

Yuichiro Takiguchi, Boy #13 - Weapon: Baseball Bat - A bashful, kind boy and the second shortest person in class (Yutaka is the shortest). A big fan of anime. Good friends with Tadakatsu. He has a crush on Mitsuko, and for that, Yutaka thinks he is crazy.

Sho Tsukioka, Boy #14 - Weapon: Deringer - A very flamboyant boy who was open about his sexuality and made uncomfortable advances on several of the boys (especially Mim). Sho died when he wandered into a predetermined danger zone and his collar went off; Yutaka was not far from the area and at least heard the detonation, if not saw it firsthand. Yutaka was one of the few who didn't care about Sho's orientation, but because Sho was brash, narcissistic, and opinionated, they didn't get along.

Shuya Nanahara, Boy #15 - Weapon: Army Knife - It's Shuya. Everyone loves Shuya. Shuya is an orphan, and it's commonly believed that the car collision that killed his parents was no accident, but planned by the government; Mr. and Mrs. Nanahara were once very vocal against Greater East Asia. Yutaka admires Shuya's musical prowess, but he secretly can't help frowning whenever Shuya rallies the class around him. Yutaka thinks that position belongs to Mim.

Kazushi Niida, Boy #16 - Weapon: Shamisen - A soccer player and a perverted creep who spent his time leering at the girls. Yutaka didn't like him much. He liked him even less when he saw him murder poor Akamatsu. Still, Yutaka couldn't help freaking out when he stumbled across Niida's corpse a few days later in the woods.

Mitsuru Numai, Boy #17 - Weapon: Walther PPK - A tough boy in Kiriyama's gang who at least retains some moral compass. Of all of Kiriyama's cronies, Yutaka thinks the best of Mitsuru. That's still not saying much, but...

Tadakatsu Hatagami, Boy #18 - Weapon: M19 Revolver - Friends with Yuichiro since childhood, he plays on the baseball team. Tough and gruff, he is not a man of many words, which means Yutaka will clash with him whenever they meet.

Shinji Mimura, Boy #19 - Weapon: Beretta Pistol - Mim and Yutaka have been best friends for at least two years. They couldn't be more different from one another. Mim is tall, handsome, popular, and charming, while Yutaka is short, childish, "uncool," and ungainly; Mim is physically fit and extremely intelligent while Yutaka is failing gym class and needs everything explained to him twice. Still, they are inseparable, and practically as close as brothers; you'll never see one without the other. Next to his family, Mim is probably the most important person to Yutaka. But when Yutaka saw Mim kill Keita, he began to question whether Mim would hesitate to kill him, too.

Kyoichi Motobuchi, Boy #20 - Weapon: S&W Revolver - The gawking, geeky class president. He's socially awkward to an extreme, but kindhearted. Yutaka feels sorry for him, but on the other hand Kyo's dad works for the government, firmly landing the Motobuchi family in a place of distrust; Yutaka thinks the Program is rigged in Kyo's favor.

Kazuhiko Yamamoto, Boy #21 - Weapon: Colt Python - Sakura's boyfriend. Yutaka respects his patience.

Mizuho Inada, Girl #1 - Weapon: Double-Bladed Knife - An eccentric, daydreamy girl who likes to play Dungeons and Dragons. Considering his nature, Yutaka probably tried to play it with her from time to time before running away in fear, what the hell is up with this girl

Yukie Utsumi, Girl #2 - Weapon: Browning Hi-Power - Friends with Fumiyo, which makes her A-OK in Yutaka's eyes. She is to the girls what Shuya is to the boys: bold, charismatic, endearing.

Megumi Eto, Girl #3 - Weapon: Diving Knife - Very shy and very cute. Friends with Noriko.

Sakura Ogawa, Girl #4 - Weapon: Pen Knife - Nice, but trivial. Kind of weird. Dating Kazuhiko.

Izumi Kanai, Girl #5 - Weapon: Hand Grenade x2 - Kind of rude. Yuck. No wonder Mitsuru likes her. Friends with Mayumi.

Yukiko Kitano, Girl #6 - Weapon: Darts and Dartboard - Slightly high maintenance, Yutaka thought she was adorable; she reminded him slightly of his little sister. From a distance, he saw her get shot to death at the lookout alongside Yumiko, her best friend.

Yumiko Kusaka, Girl #7 - Weapon: Megaphone - Yukiko's best friend, a calm, sporty girl. Yutaka saw her die with Yukiko at the lookout. They had been trying to rally the students against the Program. Knowing that they failed, Yutaka wonders how in the world he and Mim are supposed to succeed.

Kayoko Kotohiki, Girl #8 - Weapon: S&W 59 - An energetic girl who enjoys traditional tea ceremonies. Her upbeat personality hides low self-esteem, not unlike Yutaka. Yutaka probably enjoys trading quips with her.

Yuko Sakaki, Girl #9 - Weapon: Baton and Cyanide - A pretty girl. Very religious. Even the slightest violence upsets her. Yutaka is really worried about how she's coping with the Program...

Hirono Shimizu, Girl #10 - Weapon: S&W 10 - Scary butch girl probably capable of beating Yutaka up with one hand behind her back...and knowing her reputation, she probably has before.

Mitsuko Souma, Girl #11 - Weapon: Sickle - Known by classmates as "Hardcore Souma." If possible, she is even scarier than Hirono, in a very cold, hard, preserved sort of way. There are rumors running around Shiroiwa Junior High that she sliced a boy with a switchblade. And that's before the Battle Royale.

Haruka Tanizawa, Girl #12 - Weapon: Stun Gun - A tall, aggressive girl who plays volleyball. Many of her classmates speculate that she and Chisato are secretly a couple. Another girl who scares Yutaka because she can very easily beat him up.

Takako Chigusa, Girl #13 - Weapon: Ice Pick - Beautiful, athletic, and fairly intelligent, Yutaka finds her intimidating. She has a reputation for being an ice queen, but Yutaka is at least smart enough to realize she must be a nice girl to have befriended someone as shy as Sugi. Yutaka thinks she and Satomi should be friends.

Mayumi Tendo, Girl #14 - Weapon: Nunchaku - Rather aloof and hard to read, she was friends with Izumi. Yutaka saw Akamatsu kill her. She was the first "official" kill of the Program, after which Yutaka stood paralyzed with fear. Coming to his senses, he ran like hell.

Noriko Nakagawa, Girl #15 - Weapon: Boomerang - A very, very quiet girl. Yutaka knows nothing about her except that she's friends with the shy Megumi. Birds of a feather?

Yuka Nakagawa, Girl #16 - Weapon: CZ 75 - No relation to Noriko--it's just a common surname. A chubby girl who wears her hair in pigtails. Kind of loud and scary...

Satomi Noda, Girl #17 - Weapon: Submachine Gun - A cute, bespectacled girl who manages to be both sporty and studious. Generous and helpful, but a bit of a loner. Yutaka is likely to have gone to her for homework help. Yutaka thinks she and Takako should be friends.

Fumiyo Fujiyoshi, Girl #18 - Weapon: N/A - Short, overweight, pockmarked, soft-spoken, nervous, Fumiyo was not a very pretty girl...and yet Yutaka was heavily crushing on her. To him, Fumiyo was beautiful. He hated it when she cried and, as he tells Mim, "It felt like whenever she was being pretty, she was being pretty just for me." Yutaka never worked up the courage to tell her how he felt. Fumiyo was one of the first kids killed--not in the Program proper but by the coordinator, Yonemi Kamon, who was trying to make an example of her. Yutaka was sitting next to her when she was killed. Yutaka was heartbroken when she died, shown to break down in tears. When Yutaka and Mim later conspire to build a bomb that will dismantle the game's coordination area, they name it "Fumiyo's Revenge" in honor of Yutaka's late crush.

Chisato Matsui, Girl #19 - Weapon: Luger 9mm - A softspoken, elegant, freckle-faced girl never seen without Haruka. Like everyone else in class, Yutaka thinks she and Haruka are a secret couple. Yutaka finds her attractive, though not as much as Fumiyo.

Kaori Minami, Girl #20 - Weapon: SIG P230 - In school she's always seemed very sweet--kind but awkward, far behind the trends, small, pockmarked, obsessed with male enka singers. She is badly bullied, called "Pizza Face" by the other boys and girls, and Yutaka possibly intervenes on her behalf from time to time. During the Program, Kaori suffers from a severe breakdown. She thinks everyone is out to get her, perhaps rightfully so, and kills anyone and anything that comes near her while screaming, "No more Pizza Face!" Yutaka feels sorry for her, but he's scared to death of her.

Yoshimi Yahagi, Girl #21 - Weapon: Plastic Hammer - One of the prettiest girls in class, a harmless airhead. She was dating Yoji. Yutaka was not at ease with her; she reminded him too often that he was an airhead himself. There was a rumor among the boys that Yoshimi was a former prostitute, and Yutaka never figured out whether this was true. He found her dead in the woods with Yoji and assumed it was lovers' suicide.
